Retired IAS officer T.V. Venkataraman, who was the Chief Secretary during former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s first tenure between 1991 and 1996, passed away at a private hospital here on Friday. He was 82 and is survived by a son and a daughter.
The retired officer had been suffering from a few ailments. He suffered a cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Porur before being declared dead at 5.48 a.m. on Friday, his son V. Ramkumar told

His mortal remains would be brought to his residence at Indira Nagar on Saturday morning and would be kept for public viewing for a few hours before the funeral, which is expected to be held between 3.30 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the crematorium in Besant Nagar the same day.
Home Secretary stint
Mr. Venkataraman was also the Home Secretary for eight years during the government headed by former Chief Minister and AIADMK founder M.G. Ramachandran.
“He was one of the few officers who served under three Chief Ministers — M.G.R, Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi,” Mr. Ramkumar said.
On the morning of August 17, 1996, some miscreants trespassed into the house of Venkataraman and attacked him. Immediately, Jayalalithaa rushed to his house and offered her sympathies. The next day, she issued a public statement condemning the brutal attack.
