MADURAI

A forest fire broke out in Rajamparai segment of Rajapalayam Forest Range on Sunday evening.

Forest department officials said the fire was spotted on a hill in Rajamparai around 6 p.m. A senior official at the spot said a team of five fire fighters and forest officials were making their way uphill.

“The area where the fire is raging does not have proper paths for vehicles. It is a seven-hour climb to the top. As soon as the fire was spotted, emergency teams were sent. Another team of 10 officers will soon make its way up,” he said around 9 p.m.

The spot is located about 20 kilometres from Rajapalayam town in Virudhunagar district.

Officials will begin ascertaining the cause of the fire as soon as they reached the spot, the officer added. He said there was no threat to human lives as people rarely went to that particular area.
