If the weatherman’s prediction comes true, the storage level in Vedanthangal tank would increase significantly. In a report on Thursday, the Regional Meteorological Centre, said that a trough of low pressure lay over South Andaman sea and neighbourhood with an upper air trough which was likely to convert into a low pressure area by the end of this week.
Last year, the Vedanthangal tank bed had almost turned barren as the Southwest and Northeast monsoons failed to bring in the adequate rain to Kancheepuram district. As a result, the annual winged visitors kept away from the 30-hectare tank, which was officially declared a protected area in 1798.
In the previous two seasons, a large number of these birds were drawn to the Vedanthangal tank.
In 2013, a depression over the Bay of Bengal in November and the subsequent cyclonic storm ‘MADI’ in December brought heavy rains to Kancheepuram district, leading to good water storage at Vedanthangal, sources pointed out.
Similarly, during the 2011-12 breeding season, the cyclone ‘NILAM’, which made the landfall at Mamallapuram on October 31, 2012, had brought the much-needed water to the bird sanctuary.
