The World Bank has approved changes in design of the six foot overbridges (FOB) proposed in the city to incorporate elements of skywalk.

The approval for the facilities came in response to a suggestion from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.

As per the changes the skywalk from the FOBs would connect to the nearby ‘activity centres' such as bus stands, railway stations and large public spaces. This is expected to facilitate optimum utilisation of the FOBs, which would have a flight of stairs, ramps and escalators too.

The work at an estimated cost of Rs.28 crore would begin in February and would be completed in five months. The State Highways Department has already prepared the detailed project reports for the FOBs on Velachery Bypass Road, near Rathna Café; Jawaharlal Nehru Salai near SBIOA School junction in Anna Nagar; GST Road near MEPZ; and Government Hospital, Chromepet; and two on Taramani Link Road – near Perungudi Road junction and the TCS junction.
