To harness the power of solar energy and to prevent evaporation from lakes, the government will set up floating solar power stations in the State, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said.
Making the announcement through a suo motu statement in the State Assembly on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said: “To prevent evaporation of water from lakes, and to increase the procurement of solar power, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation and Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd, will, for the first time, set up 250 MW floating solar power stations at a cost of ₹1,125 crore based on feasibility,” he said.
The government would also set up 25 new substations at a cost of ₹5,068.42 crore to evacuate the power being generated by various projects across the State, Mr. Palaniswami said.
He said the substations would come up in various districts of the State. Mr. Palaniswami added that to evacuate the power being generated by the 2 x 660 Udangudi Unit 1; the 2 x 150 MW Ind Bharath thermal power plant, and a new solar and wind power project, a 400 kV sub station will be set up at Ottapidaram in Thoothukudi district at a cost of ₹1,039 crore.
The government would also set up 400 kV substations in Samugarengapuram in Tirunelveli district, Neyveli in Cuddalore district, Konthagai in Sivaganga district and Parali in Coimbatore district. Ten 230 kV substations and ten 110 kv substations will be set up in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Madurai, Tirunelveli and other places, the Chief Minister said.
