Ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls scheduled on May 16, police personnel took out a flag march here on Tuesday evening to raise awareness about the democratic right of exercising one’s franchise in polling booths across the district.

Paramilitary force personnel also took part in this march led by Superintendent of Police Ashwin M. Kotnis. It was to encourage the electors to cast their votes without fear.

Security at polling stations would be strengthened with the deployment of adequate security personnel. The awareness march commenced from a station near Tuticorin South police and passed through thoroughfares of Tuticorin town and commercial streets. Nine companies of paramilitary forces from various places would be deployed at polling booths in all the six Assembly constituencies in the district. Ninety-six of the 1,559 polling booths in the district had been identified as vulnerable. Security would be strengthened in all the vulnerable booths, sources said.
