A fast track court here has upheld a trial court order sentencing former Vice-Chancellor of Periyar University here Sethupathy Ramalingam to five years rigorous imprisonment in the case relating to alleged dowry harassment of his daughter-in-law.

The 4th Judicial Magistrate court here in June last had pronounced the judgement holding Ramalingam guilty of charges of harassment of his daughter-in-law Sangeetha.

Police had registered a case against Ramalingam and others in 2003 based on a complaint from Sangheetha that her husband, Rajavel Sethupathy, along with his parents, sister and brother-in-law, had demanded jewellery, car and cash as dowry.

She had also alleged that Ramalingam misbehaved with her.

Ramalingam had moved the Fast Track Court-II challenging the trial court verdict. Fast Track court Judge Chandrasekaran yesterday confirmed the five years sentence.
