Five persons were killed and seven others injured in an explosion at Naranapuram near here on Sunday.

While three were killed on the spot, two others succumbed to injuries at the Government Hospital.

The condition of three of the injured is said to be highly critical.

They were engaged in mixing chemicals to make pellets, an essential component for making ‘fancy’ fireworks, under a tree for New Rathna Fireworks.

Two units of Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the fire. The deceased were identified as Chellaiah (35), Kani (40), Marimuthu (48), Murugan (35) and Paulraj (60).

The injured are Natarajan (48), Thangapandi (29), Pavulgandhi (37), Karuppasamy (50), Madurai Veeran (34), Marimuthu (38) and Pandi.

The Information and Special Programme Implementation Minister K.T. Rajendhira Balaji, and District Collector T.N. Hariharan visited the injured at the hospital.
