Over two weeks after a retired Electricity Board official was hacked to death, a special branch police team cracked the case by arresting five persons, including a Commerce graduate who had appeared for the examination for recruitment of Sub- Inspectors of Police.

After pursuing some complex leads, the special team, headed by Sub-Inspector of Police R. Ramanathan, arrested the five persons – a 73-year-old man, his two sons and two mercenaries on a charge of murdering G. Tamizharasan, retired Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco).

Madavan Magesh (27), one of the sons of the old man, and R. Selvam (29), a mercenary, hacked and stabbed Tamizharasan to death, when he was riding a two-wheeler here on July 12. The three others, including P. Gopal (73), acted as conspirators, the police said. Gopal’s other son Bala Yogesh (25) had appeared for the SI examination, the police said.

The accused were arrested recently and remanded in judicial custody, the police said, adding they were looking for three more persons in the case. The offenders were charged under Sections 120 (b), 109, 302 read with 34 of the Indian Penal Code, the police added.

A dispute over a prime property on the East Coast Road (ECR) seemed to be the motive for the murder, the police said. The special team comprised head constables Udayakumar, Amalraj, Magendiran, Grade I constable Prabakaran and constable Chinnathambi.

After the murder, the District Bar Association boycotted the courts and made a representation to the SP to arrest the culprits as Sindhu, daughter of the deceased, was a practising advocate and a member of the association.

Tangedco employees also staged a demonstration, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused.
