Since 1954, the Fisheries Department has not had a building on its own and they have been operating out of a small office in the Botanical Gardens. Now, as of Thursday afternoon, the department has its own building at the Thengathittu Harbour.

The new building will incorporate the Fisheries Department as well as the harbour building and was constructed by the Project Implementation Agency, with funding from the World Bank, Director of Fisheries G. Ramalakshmi said.

Construction cost

The building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 5 crore.

Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy encouraged the department to start their own canteen, since commuting to the harbour would be a problem.

During the function, the staff of the Fisheries Department requested the Chief Minister to start a bus service to the harbour.
