Fishermen to go ahead with stir

October 03, 2010 02:48 am | Updated 02:48 am IST - RAMANATHAPURAM:

Mechanised boat fishermen of Rameswaram on Saturday reiterated that they will go ahead with the proposed agitation at Kachchatheevu by crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line on October 11.

S. Venugopal, president of the Tamil Nadu Coast Mechanised Boat Fishermen Association, told TheHindu that it would extend full cooperation for the agitation to protest against the Sri Lankan Navy's harassment of fishermen from Tamil Nadu in “traditional fishing ground,” and attract the attention of State and Central governments to find an amicable solution to the long-pending issue.

He said the fishermen of Rameswaram and neighbouring areas had no option but to venture into traditional fishing areas as marine wealth in Indian waters had depleted.
