Fishermen strike enters fourth day

Fishermen in Rameswaram did not put out to sea for the fourth consecutive day, on Friday demanding immediate release of five fishermen who were arrested by Sri Lankan navy.

Five fishermen hailing from Rameswaram were detained by Sri Lankan navy on Monday last on the charges of smuggling drugs to Lanka. They are lodged in Jaffna prison.

The mechanised boat fishermen began an indefinite strike since then demanding their immediate release and dropping of the cases registered against them by Sri Lankan government.

Meanwhile, Dr. M.H.Jawahirullah, Ramanathapuram MLA and pesident of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), urged the Central and state governments to take immediate steps for the safe release of fishermen.
