Normal life was affected in Karaikal and the district witnessed a series of road blockades and demonstrations staged by fisher folk condemning the killing of a Nagapattinam-based fisherman, here on Monday.

Fishermen in over 10 villages abstained from work and took to the streets from Vanjoor to Nandalar bridge for registering their condemnation of persistent attacks on Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy.

They received support from the Karaikal Chamber of Commerce.

All commercial establishments put up the shutter through the day. The deserted streets gave the impression of a bandh call. Transport services were hit and the few two-wheelers that plied were stopped.
