According to a statement issued by the ICG, Tuticorin Station, on Thursday, the fishing boat they were in drifted into Sri Lankan waters due to engine failure. It was towed by Sri Lankan Navy to Dikovita harbour. After the engine was repaired, the boat crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line at 7.35 a.m. on August 15. After entering Indian waters, the boat stopped again due to a breakdown. The ICG personnel extended all logistic and medical support to the fishermen and tried to rectify the defect. However, the boat could not be repaired for want of spare parts and rough sea conditions in the Gulf of Mannar.
Finally, ICGS Abhiraj towed the boat to Thoothukudi harbour on August 16, and handed over the fishermen to Fisheries Department, the statement added.
