Marine Police of Coastal Security Group personnel rescued three fishermen who were in distress mid sea on Thursday after their country boat suffered engine failure.

On getting information, the CSG personnel launched a search for the stranded boat and located it about six nautical miles off Threspuram coast, Inspector of Marine Police C. Mukesh Jeyakumar said. The boat was towed to the shore, and the fishermen – M. Santhanaraj (40), Packiyam (61) and Edison (28) – were handed over to their relatives.

ICG receives four

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) received four fishermen of Chinnamuttom from Sri Lankan authorities recently.

According to a statement issued by the ICG, Tuticorin Station, on Thursday, the fishing boat they were in drifted into Sri Lankan waters due to engine failure. It was towed by Sri Lankan Navy to Dikovita harbour. After the engine was repaired, the boat crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line at 7.35 a.m. on August 15. The ICG diverted ICGS Abhiraj to escort the boat to the shore.

After entering Indian waters, the boat stopped again due to a breakdown. The ICG personnel extended all logistic and medical support to the fishermen and tried to rectify the defect. However, the boat could not be repaired for want of spare parts and rough sea conditions in the Gulf of Mannar.

Finally, ICGS Abhiraj towed the boat to Thoothukudi harbour on August 16, and handed over the fishermen to Fisheries Department, the statement added.
