The Sri Lankan Navy reportedly opened fire on Rameswaram fishermen, killing one, when they were fishing on the high seas on Monday night.

Fishermen leaders P. Sesu Raja and Emirat, quoting fishermen who survived the firing in the boat, said that K. Britso (22) from Thangachimadam suffered bullet injuries on his neck and succumbed to injuries while being brought to shore.

The alleged firing took place around 10 p.m. and, immediately, one of the six fishermen on board called Mr. Sesu Raja and asked him to alert Indian Coast Guard (ICG) to come to their rescue.

As the ICG, which asked for details of the positioning of the fishermen in distress, could not reach them immediately, the fishermen, with injured Britso, sailed back to the shore, when he succumbed after excessive bleeding, Mr. Emirat said.
