The District Crime Branch police have registered an FIR against a Chennai-based woman, her husband, and four others for allegedly cheating a retired government employee of Rs. 23 lakh after promising to get his relative a Public Relations Officer (PRO) job in the government. Muniaswamy in his complaint said he approached R. Padma and her husband Rangarajan, residing in Valasaravakkam, through her driver Saleem, a native of Keezhakarai, to secure a transfer for his relative Manoharan, who was working as an engineer in the Agriculture Department.

As demanded by the couple, he paid them Rs. 5 lakh on July 23 last and Rs. 8 lakh on August 5. Stating that it became difficult to get the transfer, the couple offered to get him a PRO job in government, if they were given another Rs. 10 lakh. Mr. Muniaswamy paid them Rs. 10 lakh on August 27, the police said.

The police said Padma claimed to be the national secretary of Human Rights Commission and that her husband was working in the office of the DIG in Chennai.
