A day after the body of CPI(M) leader W.R. Varadarajan, whose sudden disappearance was shrouded in mystery, was identified by his wife, police on Monday said the fingerprints have tallied.
“It is confirmed (that it is Varadarajan). The fingerprints tallied,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Shakeel Akhtar told PTI.
Asked if DNA test would be carried out despite the fingerprints proof, he said, a requisition has been made but “any one scientific proof” was enough as part of the probe.
A post mortem was conducted today and the report would be available in a few days, he said, adding investigation would, however, go on.
The body of 64-year-old Varadarajan, who was reportedly upset over being stripped of key party posts on charge of misconduct early this month, was found from a lake in Porur, a few days after he left his home on February 11, leaving two unsigned letters. Police launched a manhunt following a complaint from CPI(M) on his disappearance.
Varadarajan,a CPI(M) Central Committee member, was divested of all party posts for “conduct that was not in conformity with Marxist principles”.
On Sunday, Varadarajan’s wife Saraswathy identified his highly decomposed body, but the party chose to play it safe, saying only forensic and DNA tests would confirm whether it was him. Varadarajan, a qualified chartered accountant, had given up his job with the Reserve Bank of India to pursue Left politics.
