Fill jail but no bail, Stalin tells DMK cadre

June 24, 2012 02:25 am | Updated November 16, 2021 11:44 pm IST - CHENNAI:

DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin has asked party cadre not to seek bail in the event of their arrest during the ‘jail bharo’ protest on July 4 to condemn repressive measures of the government and arrest of party functionaries.

Addressing the DMK executive meeting, Mr. Stalin asked the party’s panchayat union and district secretaries to prepare a list of cadres prepared to court arrest.

“Those who are arrested should not seek bail. This should be the condition for participating in the agitation,” Mr. Stalin said. He was prepared to face arrest along with the party workers.

Karunanidhi call

Addressing a public meeting on Friday night here, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said the protesters should follow the non-violent path of Gandhi and Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, the founder of the Dravidian movement. Though some political leaders might say that the protest would result in violence, the party’s objective was to shun violence.

“We should uphold the principle of keeping away from inflicting injuries or hurting our enemies. We should not give room for violent incidents. If anyone tries to resort to violence, we will hand over them to officials to be sent to prison,” Mr. Karunanidhi said.

A press release from the DMK headquarters said the jail bharo agitations would be held in front of district collectorates and taluk offices across the State.
