While their parents were fighting all odds to educate them, five students worked hard to keep their dreams alive. On Tuesday, the students hogged the limelight as they emerged toppers in the district.
M. Anandhi of Government Girls HSS, Tiruvalam has secured the top rank among government schools with 1,157 marks. She scored centum in Mathematics.
Her father R. Meghavanan, a welder, earns Rs. 4,000 a month, while her mother Kanniammal works as a coolie and earns Rs. 2,000.
“We have three daughters. Though we are coolie workers, we ensured that our daughters get good education. My eldest daughter is a nurse, while the second daughter has completed B.Sc degree,” said Kanniammal, a resident of Samarayanallur in Tiruvalam.
Anandhi wants to study medicine, and is confident of getting through NEET. “I am preparing for NEET phase 2. I am confident of doing well,” she said. She dreams of becoming a cardiologist.
But her mother Kanniammal wears a worried look as the financial situation at her home is difficult. Sharing the first rank with Anandhi is N. Nandhini of GGHSS, Gajalnaickenpatti. Her parents too are daily wage labourers. Happy with her performance in class XII, Nandhini also wants to pursue medicine.
Another medical aspirant, B. Soniya, of GGHSS, Gajalnaickenpatti, has secured 1,154 marks and stands second in the district. M. Mohanavel of Government Boys HSS, Gajalnaickenpatti, shares the second rank with her. He has secured centum in Mathematics. “It has been my aim since childhood to become a doctor. I am preparing for NEET. My parents are daily wage labourers but I am confident of getting admission for MBBS by merit,” he added.
D. Prema, a student of GGHSS, Arcot, is keen on becoming a Chartered Accountant. A student of the science stream, she said, “We had a counselling session at school when I came to know about CA. Many said that CA is very tough and it is this factor that attracted me towards the course,” she said. She wants to study B.Com.
Prema has secured 1,149 marks and obtained the third rank in the district. . Her father D. Duraivelu works as a security, while her mother works in a leather company.
