The district has received large quantity of complex and potash fertilizers to meet the growing demand of maize growers.
The Indian Potash Limited has despatched 1,115 tonnes complex fertilizers meant for Dindigul and 150 tonnes for Karur district. Unloading was being done at Dindigul railway station on Wednesday.
Workers were busy in unloading the fertilizer bags from the goods wagons and dispatched to other places in trucks.
When contacted Assistant Director K. Selvaraj said that import of fertilizers was made keeping in mind the onset of the northeast monsoon. Complex fertilizer was the most important at initial stage for maize cultivation. Arrivals well in advance will automatically eliminate fertilizer scarcity at the time of bulk off-take. Moreover, such measure will prevent escalation of fertilizer prices in retail sale during the peak sale period.
Fertilizers will be sold through cooperative bodies and their sales outlets, he added.
Palani, Oddanchatram, Vedasandur, Thoppampatti, Gujiliamparai, Dindigul, Reddiyarchatram and Natham are the major maize production centre in the district. Normally, maize cultivation will take place in 45,000 hectares in Palani and Oddanchatram block alone, said agriculture officials.
