Fellowship for professor

A.G. Murugesan, Professor and environmental scientist of Sri Paramakalyani Centre of Excellence in Environmental Sciences of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, has been awarded the prestigious fellowship of the National Academy of Biological Sciences.

This was announced at the national seminar on ‘Biological production for crop, animal and human health,’ held at the University of Mysore recently. Dr. Murugesan, who has developed a few technologies for environmental protection, has been working on environmental pollution and bioremediation, pollution, toxicology, natural resource management, water quality assessment, aquatic weed control, production of bioplastic, hydrogen and ethanol from waste and environmental impact assessment over the past three decades.

He is also working on the environmental status of the Tamirabharani and has organised a number of seminars and workshops for academicians and farming community. He has written six books and published more than 675 research papers in national, international journals and seminar proceedings. He is the sub-editor and editorial board member in a few journals.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court appointed him as expert commissioner to examine the impact of sand mining in the Tamirabharani and suggest way of mining sand without affecting the eco system. The government of Tamil Nadu conferred on him the Environment Protection Award in 2003 and the Tamil Nadu Scientist Award in 2004.
