A 60-year-old widow, who submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunakaran on Monday seeking police intervention to save her from aggressors, has been asked to contact the Superintendent of Palayamkottai Central Prison after 15 days to know the action taken on her plea.

Whenever the public submit petition to the Collector during the weekly grievance day meetings being organised on Mondays, acknowledgements are given to petitioners, which will direct the petitioners to contact a particular official after 15 days to know about the action taken on their grievance.

When K. Chinnathaai of Karivalamvanthanallur near Sankarankovil submitted her petition to the Collector on Monday seeking protection from those who were making sustained attempts to drive her out of her house and grab the house illegally, the illiterate widow was given the acknowledgement receipt that asked the old lady to contact the Superintendent of Palayamkottai Central Prison instead of Superintendent of Police, Tirunelveli district.

“Though I submitted several petitions with the Karivalamvanthanallur police, no action has been taken against the aggressors. Hence, I submitted my petition to the Collector,” said Mrs. Chinnathaai, while showing the acknowledgement that said the petition would be forwarded to the Superintendent of Palayamkottai Central Prison.

When asked about this blunder after the reporters noticed this faulty guidance, those who were giving the acknowledgement just said the “simple mistake” would be rectified.
