Appealing that the Land Bill be dropped, DMK top leader M.K. Stalin on Thursday said the suicide of a farmer in Delhi was a warning to the Centre and also asked the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu to re-consider its support to the “anti-people” legislation.
“This suicide is a warning sign to the Central government. I appeal to them to act promptly and drop the anti-farmers land acquisition bill. I also urge the AIADMK to re-consider its support for this anti-people legislation,” Mr. Stalin said in a Facebook post.
Expressing condolences to the kin of Gajendra Singh, Mr. Stalin said he was shattered by his suicide.
“Land is not merely an economic asset, it is a source of livelihood for families. Landowners have an emotional connect to their land that cannot be compensated with using money,” he said.
A Rajasthan farmer had on Wednesday committed suicide by hanging from a tree at a rally addressed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.
