Farmers oppose HT towers on agricultural lands

The Tamil Nadu Farmers Association on Saturday urged the Central and State governments not to force farmers into allowing construction of high tension (HT) towers on their lands.

In a statement, the Association’s State general secretary P. Shanmugam said that farmers were being threatened in some places to allow the towers to come on their lands.

Farmers wanted the government to implement a scheme to supply power to other States by laying cables rather than constructing HT towers on agricultural lands.

The association also asked the State government to implement the project after talks between officials and farmers associations came to an end.

During the tripartite meetings held between officials of the Power Grid Corporation of India, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and farmers associations on June 5 and 6, it was decided that the project would not proceed until after another meeting.

Work was being carried out at Pochampalli and farmers and the public staged a protest.
