Alleging that the issues faced by farmers were being ignored by successive governments, including the one headed by Narendra Modi, anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare said that his satyagraha in New Delhi from March 23 would corner the government on its failure to solve farmers’ issues.

He was addressing a gathering at the a national-level consultation on ‘Restoration of environmental flow of rivers, alternative ways to share and manage river basin water here on Sunday.

“There is a huge difference between the minimum support price (MSP) for crops fixed by the government every year and the MSP recommended by the government-appointed expert committees. For some crops, the MSP fixed by the government was just half the figure recommended by the committees. With such low income, how will the farmer survive,” he asked and added that there had been no response from the government when this was raised with it.

Stating that governments heard the people only when they feared poll loss, he appealed to the farmers to participate in large numbers in the satyagraha.

“Farmers have the power to change the government and we should show it,” he added.
