Members of the Cauvery Rights Retrieval Forum staged a demonstration here on Monday demanding action against those responsible for the death of a Tiruvannamalai farmer during forced distraint proceedings for loan default.

Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam district president Manimozhiyan led the demonstration in which the Forum coordinator P. Maniyarasan, Tamizhar Desiya Munnani general secretary Ayyanapuram C. Murugesan, IJK district president Simione Xavier Raj and others participated.

They condemned the action of certain officials of the State Bank of India in Pondhai village of Tandarampattu block in Tiruvannamalai district who deployed collection agents to recover the outstanding dues from farmer Gnanasekaran, who died after being allegedly assaulted.

The members sought criminal action against the errant officials and recovery agents. The protesters also sought a compensation of ₹25 lakh to the next of kin of Gnanasekaran and called upon the banks to stop forthwith all distraint proceedings against defaulting farmers across the State.
