At 1.50 p.m. on Monday, the heart of a 23-year-old brain- dead accident victim, began its journey from Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, to give a new lease of life to a recipient at a Chennai-based hospital.
The vital organs of the youth, a male nurse, were donated by his family.
According to CMC authorities, Jacob Raj Moses, a resident of Bernicepuram, Katpadi, worked as a nurse at Scudder Memorial Hospital in Ranipet.
He was travelling on a two-wheeler when he got injured in an accident near Thiruvalam on September 16. He was admitted to the CMC.
At 7.52 p.m. on Sunday, doctors declared him brain- dead as he did not respond to treatment.
After doctors explained the patient’s condition, the youth’s family agreed to donate his organs.
His vital organs - heart, liver, kidneys and lungs - were harvested and given to various hospitals for transplantation.
His heart was sent to Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Chennai, while the liver and one kidney were given to CMC.
The other kidney was taken to Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, and lungs were given to Fortis Malar Hospital, Chennai.
“The heart was retrieved by a team of doctors at 1.40 p.m. and taken from CMC by road. Police created a green corridor to transport the heart to Frontier Lifeline in Chennai. It will take 1.55 hours to reach its destination,” said Sangeeth Devanand, transplant coordinator, CMC.
