Madras High Court on Thursday refused to grant bail to a DMDK councillor, >arrested for allegedly posting defamatory statements against Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on a social networking portal.

Malli alias Subramaniam, DMDK Mettupalayam town secretary and a councillor of the town municipality, was arrested on August 4 on a complaint by AIADMK’s Vanmathi, also a councillor, objecting to his remarks on his page in Facebook.

When his bail plea came up for hearing, Justice P Devadass rejected it, saying “vituperative, whimsical” statement “intended to tarnish” the image of persons in public life had been made.

“It is intolerable and highly condemnable. It is not a fit case for bail. Dismissed,” the Judge held.
