ormer branch manager of Muthoottu Mini Financiers Private Limited in Gangavalli, who was arrested for stealing 5,330 gm of gold jewellery from the firm on August 13, was produced in court and lodged in prison.
Addressing mediapersons in Attur on Friday, Superintendent of Police P. Rajan said the case was solved and property recovered within 36 hours of the incident on August 16.
Later, the accused, V. Marudhaimani (25), confessed to the crime, leading to recovery of 477 packets containing jewellery. Though initially he denied taking Rs. 1.34 lakh in cash, it too was recovered from his house in Attur. Five duplicate keys, tools used to cut the grills and his two-wheeler were also seized. Since the strongroom and the lockers were not broken, they suspected it to be the handiwork of the present or former employees.
The accused sprayed chilli powder to prevent fingerprint experts or sniffer dogs from tracing him.
Marudhaimani was produced before the Judicial Magistrate II A. Umamaheswari who sent him to judicial custody.
Though the police had asked banks and private financial institutions to strengthen security on the premises, surveillance cameras in the branch were not functioning and security personnel were not recruited, the SP said.
