Road safety week to be celebrated from January 11 to 21

Exhibitions on safe driving, distribution of pamphlets, and awareness rallies marked the commencement of the 26{+t}{+h}road safety week celebrations across the region on Sunday.

Minister for Housing R.Vaithilingam, who inaugurated the celebration in Thanjavur, listed out the steps taken to prevent road accidents, and said that cooperation of road-users was essential bring down the accident rate. Road-users must join hands with the police in enforcing road rules, and must desist from using mobile phones while driving, he said.

KARUR: Inaugurating the awareness rally, Collector S.Jayandhi said that road safety week was celebrated to create awareness among all stakeholders, including drivers, motorists, road-users and passengers. Accidents could be brought down to a great extent if road-users adhere to rules and regulations, she said. The rally, which was flagged off at the bus stand, went through important thoroughfares across the town. A large number of students, drivers, and conductors took part in it. The Superintendent of Police, Joshi Nirmal Kumar, took part.

PUDUKOTTAI: District Collector S.Ganesh inaugurated the celebrations at the new bus stand here. E.S.Uma, Superintendent of Police, and N.Balagurunathan, Regional Transport Officer, inspected the awareness exhibition inaugurated as part of the celebrations. A free eye camp for drivers would be organised during the week, he said. Cultural programmes and awareness rallies would also be organised across the district.

NAGAPATTINAM: A road safety awareness exhibition was inaugurated at the new bus stand by Fisheries Minister K.A.Jayapal. An awareness rally was taken out from the new bus stand to old bus stand in which students took part.

PERAMBALUR: A road safety awareness exhibition was held at the new bus stand in which a film on accidents recorded at important road junctions was screened. A rally by drivers, driving school owners, trainers, and police personnel was held. Ms.Sonal Chandra, Superintendent of police, flagged off the rally which commenced at the new bus stand reached old bus stand via Palakkarai, Rover roundabout, and Sangupettai.

T.Arivalagan, Regional Transport Officer, and A.Babu and P.Periyasamy, Transport Inspectors, were present.
