At the polling station at Thorapadi, a group of friends were jubilant as they got their fingers inked for the first time.

“It was an exciting experience to vote for the first time,” said 21-year-old U. Vicky. As he and his friends posed for photographs and took ‘selfies,’ they underlined the need for job opportunities for engineering students like them.

Twenty-year-old Kausalya, a resident of Oosur, was tense about voting for the first time. “In fact, she woke up early and got ready to come to the polling station,” her mother quipped. “Now I am happy that I have voted,” Kausalya added.

Several elderly persons arrived at the polling stations to cast their vote. One of them was 75-year-old retired government school teacher Ramalingam of Kollaimedu.

“I have voted in all elections till now,” he said.

Lakshmi, in her 90s, arrived in a two-wheeler sandwiched between two villagers. As one of them carried her to the polling station, she insisted that she would walk to the booth. For differently-abled persons, the availability of ramps and wheelchairs made voting easy.
