Coimbatore's excise revenue till January 2011 this financial year is 133 per cent more than the revenue collected during the same period last year.
C. Rajendiran, Commissioner of Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax, Coimbatore Commissionerate, said at the Central Excise Day celebrations here on Thursday that the excise revenue till January in 2010-11 was Rs. 182.61 crore as against Rs. 78.29 crore for the same period last year.
The Service Tax collected between April and January in 2010-11 in Coimbatore was Rs. 240 crore as against Rs. 180 crore collected up to January last fiscal. About 1,500 returns were filed electronically every month.
For 2011-12, the Coimbatore Commissionerate planned to conduct audits in about 800 units.
A sensitisation programme for the targeted assessees and service providers would be held to enhance voluntary compliance. It was also planned to organise six orientation programmes in association with the industrial bodies for the new registered assessees and service providers.
P. Sivanandi, Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, who was the chief guest for the event, said the police had taken up a programme to help students from the economically weaker section in their education. He urged the industry to join hands with the police in this effort.
Ravi Sam, Managing Director of Adwaith Lakshmi Industries, said better compliance was needed.

K. Raveen Kumar Reddy, Chief General Manager of Concor, said the Irugur Inland Container Depot had seen about 100 per cent growth in cargo handled during the last one year.
T. Premkumar, Chief Commissioner of Customs, Central Excise and Service tax, Coimbatore Zone, said the Automation of Central Excise and Service Tax programme was a success in Coimbatore Zone. Computerised operations facilitated tax payment.
