A second-year B. Tech (Information Technology) student of a private engineering college was found dead in her college hostel at Tiruchengode late on Sunday night.

The police said that fellow students found V. Gayathri, who hailed from Veppalampatty, hanging in her room. While most of the other students went home during the break from Thursday to Sunday, she stayed back after telling her parents that there was a medical camp on Sunday.

The police quoted her friends as saying that on Sunday evening they tried to call her. When she did not respond and finding the room was locked from inside, they informed the warden.

The room was opened and she was found hanging.

Doctors of a private hospital came to the hostel and declared her dead. The body was then taken to Tiruchengode Government Hospital.

According to the police, Gayathri’s friends said that she had been upset over exam arrears.

Relatives of the girl thronged the hospital and resorted to road roko, demanding an inquiry into the death.

Deputy Superintendent of Police A. Sujatha assured them of necessary action based on the post-mortem report.

As demanded by her relatives, the body was taken to Salem Government Hospital for post-mortem. It was handed over to the family on Monday.
