The front engine of the Virudhachalam–Salem diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) passenger train suffered damage when it hit the trailer of a tractor when it was passing through an unmanned level crossing between Chinna Salem and Attur railway stations in the Salem-Virudhachalam section in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

Salem Railway Division officials said the train was passing through the unmanned level crossing No. 112 at 11.47 a.m., when a tractor with two trailers hit it while trying to cross the track in a hurry. The nose cone of the DEMU was damaged. In the impact, the trailer got disconnected from the tractor. The driver fled the scene with the tractor. No one was injured in the incident.
