Fishermen observing a fast against establishment of commercial port at Enayam, in Kurumbanai in Kanniyakumari district on Monday.

Hundreds of fishermen, including women, observed a fast at Kurumbanai near here on Monday as part of their series of protests against the proposal to establish a new commercial port at Enayam.

The fast was presided over by vice-president of Kurumbanai Illasiyar Church Mariya John. Parish Priest Kaspar inaugurated the fast.

Former Colachel Municipal Chairman Jesiah, Neithal People’s Movement president Kurumbanai Berlin and South Asian Fishermen Fraternity (SAFF) general secretary Fr. Churchill participated.

To show their solidarity with the agitating fishermen, shops and business establishments downed their shutters in Kurumbanai and all fishermen abstained from fishing.

Fishermen strike

Over 300 fishermen in Chinna Muttom stayed away from the sea on Monday as the fishermen who went into the sea in a mechanised boat for fishing on Sunday did not return to the shore on the same day as per the agreement in force among them.

All their mechanised boats were anchored near the shore.
