The All India Youth Federation, the youth wing of the Communist Party of India, has demanded a separate Act to prevent honour killings in the State.
It has also expressed grave concerns over “deterioration of law and order situation in Tamil Nadu as more than 10,000 murders have taken place in the last five years”.
Talking to reporters here after presiding over the Federation’s State council meet on Sunday, AIYF all India general secretary R. Thirumalai said that 81 honour killings took place in the State in the last three years.
Assault on and murder of inter-caste couples had become the order of the day.
Honour killing was the biggest challenge posed to the civilised society. To prevent the barbaric act, the government should enact a separate law and provide adequate protection to inter-caste couples, he stressed.
Mr. Thirumalai charged that paid killers were on the increase in the State.
The election flying squads should seize money carried by politicians and party functionaries.
Instead, they had been seizing the cash carried by farmers and traders to buy agricultural products and inputs.
The Election Commission should direct the officials and police to take action against the politicians to prevent distribution of cash to voters, he added.
Earlier in a resolution passed at the State council meeting, the AIYF strongly condemned Hindutva politics, stating that the Narendra Modi government at the Centre had been trying to saffronise higher educational institutions and foisting false cases against students fighting against it, he said.
