The Erode City Municipal Corporation recently commenced work to restore the Ellapalayam Lake in Villarasampatti in Ward 31 at an outlay of ₹11 crore.
The project involves desilting the 26.55-acre lake, constructing retaining wall, strengthening the weir, creation of a park, footpath, ornamental water fountain, arch, solar lighting, beautification and planting of saplings around the lake. Waiting shed, drinking water provisions, snack shop, security booth, culverts, signboard and formation of approach road would also be undertaken by the Corporation.
Officials said that works began in June and was expected to be completed in 15 months. The main source of water for the lake is rainwater and seepage from Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal. Currently, desilting work and construction of retaining wall work were under way. This is one of the major projects that the civic body has undertaken to restore a water body in its limits.
Other works
A pond at Muthampalayam in Ward 34 was being renovated at an outlay of ₹2.75 crore. Works began in May and was expected to be completed in six months. Completion of these two works will help in recharging groundwater level in these areas, the officials said.
