An elephant brought for a temple festival from Thirparappu in Kanyakumari district created flutter near Pudukkadai on Friday.

According to police, the mahout who brought the elephant for the Amman Temple in Kalnatti area near Pudukkadai allegedly pricked the elephant with a goad (ankusam) twice for taking it to the nearby pond. Enraged over this, the elephant threw the mahout into the pond. He ran for safety from the elephant.

The elephant was seen chasing the mahout for some distance in public creating panic among the people.

On hearing about the incident, owner of the elephant Radhakrishnan and forest department officials rushed to the spot and pacified the pachyderm.

The elephant was under control after its owner Radhakrishnan reached the spot. The elephant was tied in an orchard near Pudukkadai.

It would participate in the temple festival on Saturday.
