Election Commission issues notice to Stalin

April 11, 2011 12:22 am | Updated 12:22 am IST - New Delhi:

The Election Commission on Sunday issued a notice to Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin for having allegedly making personal attacks on AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa.

The Commission has asked Mr. Stalin to submit his reply by Monday evening, a senior EC official said.

“The Commission has issued the notice to Mr. Stalin for making personal attack on Ms. Jayalalithaa in violation of the model code of conduct,” the official said.

The AIADMK on April 8 filed a complaint with the Election Commission against Mr. Stalin who had allegedly made some remarks about the marital status of Ms. Jayalalithaa.

Mr. Stalin's remark was “malicious and was beyond all limits of decency,” said the complaint, filed a day after the EC issued a notice to Ms. Jayalalithaa for allegedly making personal remarks against Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

AIADMK Rajya Sabha member P.H. Manoj Pandian in a written compliant to Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer, said quoting Mr. Stalin from a Tamil daily as saying that the AIADMK chief was not married and so was not interested in funding other women's weddings. He added it was “no way connected with the public activities of the leader.”
