Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president EVKS Elangovan on Saturday alleged irregularities in purchase of power from private companies and asked the Chief Minister to order a probe and take action against the Electricity Minister.
At a press conference, he said there was a demand-supply gap of 3,000 MW in the State. While the TNEB was purchasing power from Kudankulam and NLC at Rs. 3 a unit, it was purchasing power from private companies at Rs. 15.14 a unit. “Something wrong has happened because of which the government has lost thousands of crores.”
Mr. Elangovan condemned the Centre’s denial to release Rs. 11,000 crore earmarked for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme in the State. He said this affected the lives of rural women. If the Centre did not release the funds, the Congress would mobilise villagers and organise protests at all levels.
Mr. Elangovan criticised the Centre’s decision to impose Sanskrit in schools. As DMK president M. Karunanidhi was a senior statesman, the Chief Minister should provide the best seating arrangement to help him attend the winter session of the Assembly, Mr. Elangovan said.
