Elangovan seeks accounts from State

December 09, 2010 02:15 am | Updated 02:15 am IST - VELLORE:

Former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president E.V.K.S. Elangovan has asked the government to show accounts for the expenditure of over Rs.1,000 crore sanctioned by the Central government for tsunami relief in the State.

To press Centre for funds

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Mr. Elangovan said that he would certainly press the Centre to sanction the amount of Rs.1607 crore, which the Tamil Nadu government was planning to seek as flood relief. “But, so far, the Tamil Nadu government has not shown accounts for the expenditure incurred by it on tsunami relief with the funds of more than Rs.1000 crore sanctioned by the Central government.

“The State government is seeking more and more funds for laying roads and desilting tanks. I do not know how many times the government will show bills for laying roads and desilting tanks. The government should take steps to see that the Central funds reach the intended beneficiaries. It should show accounts for the expenditure of all the funds sanctioned by the Centre”, he said.

‘Return land'

Mr. Elangovan urged the government to return to original owners the land acquired by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board for constructing houses for middle income group at Tiruvanmiyur since the scheme had been scrapped.

‘Follow Congress model'

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government, which wanted to continue its alliance with the Congress, should follow the Congress as a model.

Referring to the statement of Mr. Karunanidhi that A. Raja, former Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, was one among many against whom allegations had been made in the spectrum scam, Mr. Elangovan challenged Mr. Karunanidhi to reveal the names of those involved, if he knew them.
