Eight fishermen from Vellapalam here landed on the Vedaranyam shores on Sunday with internal injuries allegedly inflicted by the Sri Lankan Navy.

They had ventured in six boats from Vellapalam on Saturday morning and were reportedly fishing South-East off Arcottuthurai, when their boats were intercepted by Sri Lankan Navy.

Of the injured, one has suffered a minor knife incision, while others were alleged to have been dealt with ropes and pipes causing internal injuries.

Though the fishermen have denied breaching the International Maritime Boundary Line, according to an IB source, the GPS reading revealed that they were 38 nautical miles South-East off Arcottuthurai, which was inside the territorial waters of Sri Lanka.

The fishermen also reported that their nets were slashed by the Sri Lankan Navy. At noon on Sunday, the injured were admitted to the Vedaranyam Government Hospital for treatment.
