All-out efforts to prevent avian influenza outbreak

As a precautionary measure, the Tirunelveli Corporation has launched comprehensive measures to prevent the possible outbreak of avian influenza in the city though no case has been reported so far from any part of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai.

In a statement, Corporation Commissioner S. Sivasubramanian said the urban local body, through its health department, had taken all precautionary measures to prevent the possible outbreak of avian influenza in the broiler farms during this summer and also in the sale outlets. Moreover, similar steps had been taken in the slaughter houses also.

“If the chicken, crows or other birds are found to be dead on the streets in a suspicious manner, the public should inform the Corporation officials, who will immediately take steps for removing them and sprinkling bleaching powder, phenyl or lime solution on the spot where the dead birds were lying and also in the surroundings. All health department officials of the Corporation have been instructed to monitor the areas under their jurisdiction,” Mr. Sivasubramanian said.
