The efforts of forest officials to save a bison calf which had fallen into a well, were in vain on Wednesday. The female calf aged about ten months had fallen into a well at Lakkamanai adjoining Mynalai near here. Speaking to The Hindu , the District Forest Officer, the Nilgiris North division K. Soundarapandian said that on Tuesday, villagers had brought the incident to the notice of the Forest Department.

With Forest Veterinarian Manoharan being brought from Coimbatore, a rescue operation was launched early on Wednesday by forest officials and Fire and Rescue Services personnel.

Since the narrow, abandoned well, about sixty feet deep, was in an unused private field, the operation had been difficult.

When the animal was brought up, it was struggling for life and died before medical attention could be provided.

Stating that the calf had sustained injures in the fall and in the cold water, Forest Ranger Premkumar said that the calf was buried nearby following a post-mortem.
