Health Ministry officials are hopeful of an interim solution to the impasse over NEET in Tamil Nadu following a meeting between Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday. With the Chief Minister urging Mr. Modi to exempt the State from NEET-based medical admissions, sources indicated that the Prime Minister could offer some short-term remedy for this academic year.
With opposition parties cornering the Government on its inability to obtain Presidential assent for two NEET exemption Bills, it is learnt that Mr. Palaniswami made a last-ditch effort to convince Mr. Modi to allow MBBS/BDS admissions based on Plus Two marks for this year.
Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, Mr. Palaniswami said, “We met the Prime Minister in his office. We urged him to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET and he said he would consider it.”
Later in the day, Mr. Palaniswami, along with Ministers and AIADMK MPs, called on BJP leader and vice-presidential candidate M. Venkaiah Naidu. Both the Chief Minister and the Union Minister said they were delighted that the AIADMK would be extending its support to Mr. Naidu in the vice-presidential poll.
