The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has insisted that AIADMK (Amma) leader V.K. Sasikala, currently lodged in a Bengaluru jail after her conviction in the disproportinate assets case, should appear before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court (Economic Offences-I) and face trial in cases registered against her under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act.
The case, registered over two decades ago, were revived recently with the Madras High Court directing Sasikala and other co-accused to face trial.
Sasikala, a close confidante of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, had earlier filed a petition before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A. Zakir Hussain seeking permission to appear for the hearing through video conferencing from the Parappana Agrahara prison, where she is serving her four-year sentence along with Ilavarasi, the other convict in the case.
