EC to refer political parties' suggestions to Law Ministry

August 30, 2010 11:02 pm | Updated 11:02 pm IST - CHENNAI:

The Election Commission is likely to convey to the Union Law Ministry some of the views expressed at a meeting between the Commission officers and representatives of political parties on Saturday on the revival of Legislative Council, according to a senior official.

Among the issues raised at the meeting were the demands for providing reservation for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and women in the proposed Upper House and making presidents of village panchayats part of the electoral college for local authorities constituencies.

The official, pointing to the existing Constitutional and legal position, says that there is no quota for SC/STs. Likewise the village panchayats' presidents have been excluded.

As such issues are outside the purview of the Election Commission, they may have to be referred to the Union Government for possible follow up.

Only after the notification of delimitation of constituencies and electoral registration officers will the preparation of electoral rolls begin. He adds that the final electoral rolls for Assembly constituencies will be released by the middle of September.
