The Election Commission has directed Tamil Nadu Director General of Police to inquire into raids at the residences of DMK and AIADMK leaders by a senior police official and sought a report within seven days.

In its communication to the DGP, the EC asked him to go into the conduct of S S Krishnamurthy, IG Police (South Zone) in Madurai, who had conducted raids at the premises of leaders of AIADMK and ruling DMK on December 12 without orders from the EC or the Chief Electoral Officer of the state.

Mr Krishnamurthy was recently transferred from Tiruchendur, where an assembly bypoll is due on Saturday, as the EC found his conduct was "not above board".

Earlier in the day, a delegation of AIADMK leaders petitioned the Commission demanding action against the police officers involved in the raids.
