Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam deputy floor leader in the Assembly Durai Murugan was on Monday suspended by Speaker P. Dhanapal for five days.

The Speaker also stated that the DMK’s floor leader M.K. Stalin be censured.

Mr. Dhanapal’s ruling followed adoption by the House of a report submitted by Deputy Speaker and chairman of the Committee of Privileges Pollachi V. Jayaraman on an issue raised by Municipal Administration Minister K.P. Munusamy against the two DMK leaders for certain remarks made by them after eviction from the House in October last.

Mr. Munusamy, in his representation, had stated that the DMK leaders in their interaction with the media, attributed certain observations to him as if they were made in the House, which was not the case.

The issue arose during a discussion on the logo of mini buses being run by the government-run transport corporation.

Voice vote

Subsequent to Mr. Jayaraman tabling the report, Leader of the House and Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam moved a motion for adoption of the report, which was passed by voice vote.

Members of the DMK were not present in the Assembly during the day, apparently because they had not returned to Chennai after their party conference in Tiruchi on Saturday and Sunday.
