Union Minister M.K. Alagiri’s son Durai Dhayanidhi, who was absconding for more than four months, surrendered before the Judicial Magistrate in Melur near here on Friday to avail of the anticipatory bail granted by the Madras High Court Bench here four days ago.
Accompanied by a large number of advocates and party functionaries, Mr. Durai arrived at the magistrate court around 10.30 am. After appearing before the Judicial Magistrate, Jayakumar, he waited in his car for more than an hour to execute his bail bond. He executed a personal security of Rs 10,000 and surrendered his passport. The Judicial Magistrate directed Mr. Durai to appear daily from Saturday at Keelavalavu police station near Melur in compliance with High Court orders.
Mr. Alagiri also accompanied his son to Melur to complete the court formalities. However, he chose to stay at the MP’s office at Melur, which is near to the court.
“The cases against my son are fabricated with a political motive. If any case is registered in future, we are ready to face them,” said Mr. Alagiri.
Originally, the Keelavalavu police have registered cases against Mr. Durai under various IPC sections, including 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 447 (criminal trespass) and 420 (cheating) after the Village Administrative Officer of Keelavalavu filed a complaint alleging that Olympus Granites had quarried granite illegally on government land, thereby causing a loss of Rs. 44 crore to the State’s exchequer.
Mr. Durai was reportedly the partner of Olympus Granites from 2008 to 2010. He was absconding ever since he was booked along with ten persons in connection with his alleged involvement in the multicrore illegal granite quarrying scam, on August 7, 2012.
Since then several special teams were constituted to find his whereabouts, but in vain. The immigration department was alerted to prevent Mr. Durai from fleeing the country and lookout notices were issued against him, besides a non-bailable warrant.
In October, Mr Durai’s wife Anusha Dhayanidhi, his actor friend Mahat Raghavendra, Mrs Anusha’s father Seetharaman and Mr Alagiri's sons-in-law Venkatesh and Deepak were interrogated by Madurai police. However, they told the police that they did not know Mr. Durai’s whereabouts.
In the meantime, Mr. Durai moved the High Court Bench here to obtain anticipatory bail.
After a failed attempt in September, he obtained anticipatory bail from the Madurai High Court Bench on December 10.
Olympus Granites was one of the firms against which the government initiated a crackdown after former Madurai collector U. Sahayam, in a report, estimated the losses incurred from illegal granite mining around Rs. 16,000 crore.

Now he is qualified to be the next leader. The election commission will not take this as reason to reject his nomination, if he stands for election!!! We will never be free from corruption...
What a joke is this? How will they face the charges? By absconding like this? Face your deeds.
What Mr. Gopu has pointed out is absolutely correct.
We are in a Democracy that is only for namesake. Inspite of running away and keeping a NBW in vogue, he gets a bail from some other court. I do not understand on what basis the NBW was issued and on what basis bail is granted now. Really a crazy country to be in.
Look at Mr.Durai Dayanidhi's smiling face in the photo. He is extremely happy that his father or grandfather had pulled the string properly, in getting his bail approved.
An accused is not guilty until proven so. However Caesar's wife should be above suspicion. People high and mighty should conduct themselves above suspicion. Why do the so-called supporters give to the accused a hero's treatment whenever a mighty person is accused ?
Indeed our democracy has the largest and smallest scam both. The largest in terms of money laundering and smallest in terms of category of people.
suppose an ordinary common person hides for so many days, will the court give the same judgement as given to durai dayanithy
A Union Minister's son is absconding from the law. And the Union Minister has no idea where he is ? Sad.
While the quantum of his offense is to the tune of 16000,00,00,000..but
he paid bond amount of Rs 10,000...laughing stock judiciary..
Isn't absconding a crime in itself?
I am astonished to see the chain of events. Congress got support from Mulayam and immediately after that the CBI inquiry against started. Now Karuna helped them and see Durai Dayanidhi's case is coming up. "Use and theow away" is the policy of Congress now.
Not sure why these guys are so much afraid of going to prison. They have thousands of crores and everyone knows that even the cops are afraid of them. They know that the same persons whom they are arresting can come back to power and haunt them.....
It is ridiculous to take just Rs 10,000 as security from these illicit millionaires. It is a joke and mockery of our judicial system.
It is a pity that TN police known for its efficiency is fooled for 4 months by a person whose father is a Minister. Court should ask him where he was hiding all these four months. If it is Delhi in some MP or ministers house, they should be proceeded upon. Court should caution him that as a citizen obeying the law of the land, he should have presented himself before the law engforcing authorities. If every influential persons start hinding againstg arrest and get anticipatory bail, the law will become laughing stock.
This is yet another instance where the rich and powerful can escape the noose of the law. A case has been filed, FIR has been lodged, NBW issued and the accused goes into hiding for four months and then our honourable courts decide he is to be given anticipatory bail.
Do not understand for what the anticipatory bail has been issued? Is it a prize for dodging the police for this long? Will the courts give same liberty to every ordinary citizen.
What else do we expect from the land of "cash for bail".
It is a great wonder as to where Mr Durai dayanithi was hiding all these
days. Court should definitely take note of his absconding for the last so many days after NBW was issued. so justice for the high and mighty are different rather they are eligible for justice to their terms. Great democracy we are in.
